Making a mobile game is one thing. Making one that sustains live operations and earns lasting love from global players is quite another. From day one, KingKongSoft faced a dual challenge: surviving Korea's fiercely competitive home market while standing shoulder‑to‑shoulder with top international titles. We had no licensed engine, no major publisher backing—so we wrote our own renderer, built our own server architecture, and designed our own combat balance systems from scratch. From the first playable prototype to final release, these four titles endured countless all‑nighters and total reboots. This is not a story of talent alone—it is a story of persistence, failure, and trust among a team that refused to give up.
FROM SKETCHES IN THE SKY TO AN OPEN‑WORLD ADVENTURE
How a childhood dream of flying became our most whimsical exploration game
One of our junior environment artists had a lifelong obsession with airships and floating islands. He filled his notebook with drawings of fantastical flying contraptions and cloud cities. During a brainstorming session, he proposed a game where players could freely pilot airships, land on drifting islands, and uncover ancient mysteries. The room was divided—some thought it too ambitious for mobile, others were captivated by the sheer freedom of the concept. We decided to build a prototype over the weekend.
That prototype, which featured a single island and a basic flying model, was shockingly fun. We felt genuine joy just soaring around. So we committed to a full production, but we knew the scope would be enormous. We needed a huge seamless map, dynamic weather that affects flight, and a quest system that encourages exploration rather than linear progression. Our engine team developed a streaming technology that loads terrain on the fly, allowing players to traverse the entire sky without loading screens. We also created a unique "wind current" mechanic that changes based on altitude and time of day, making every flight a new puzzle.
After two years of iteration, Azure Fantasy launched to warm reception from players who craved a peaceful yet engaging open world. It remains our most visually distinct title, with a pastel‑colored art style that stands out in the mobile market. More importantly, it reminds us that sometimes the best ideas come from a single artist's dream—and that a small team, if given the right support, can bring that dream to life on a global stage.
